Activities - Interns Diary Bozhana 2013

The following diary entry was composed by Bozhana Nikolova, a student of the MSc in World Heritage Management at UCD. Bozhana carried out her internship at the OPW between 4th June and 23rd August 2013. Bozhana is from Bulgaria and previously completed a BA in History at King’s College London. Her interests lie in historic urban landscapes and urban history.

After finishing the first year of my MSc in World Heritage Management at UCD I was delighted to start a summer internship with ICOMOS Ireland. During the first week I was organising the archives, which gave me the opportunity to learn about the history and structure of ICOMOS and the various activities and events which have been taking place every year. Currently I am writing a report on the proceedings of the networking conference organised by ICOMOS Ireland to mark the International Day for Monuments and Sites (18th April).

At the beginning of July I had the opportunity to travel to the beautiful Cork Harbour as part of the ICOMOS Annual Outing. The trip was very pleasant and informative. I also participated in a day trip to Brú na Bóinne and met the manager of the site, Clare Tuffy. I got involved in compiling a bibliography for the World Heritage Working Group and I had the chance to attend discussions on the World Heritage Periodic Reporting process. I learnt more about the management issues and state of conservation of Brú na Bóinne and Skellig Michael, and I familiarised myself with the Periodic Reporting questionnaire format.

Today is the last day of my internship. The highlight of the past month was undoubtedly my trip to Skellig Michael. I had the unique opportunity to spend three days on the island and observe how it is managed and conserved. I also went on day trips to Adara Bridge, Jerpoint Abbey, Kells Priory and Portumna Castle, all of which were very interesting. I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their help and friendliness and for making my internship a very enjoyable and educational experience!
